The FluoRa system

A patented optical guidance platform for neurosurgery that integrates fluorescence, microcirculation and tissue identification into a single device and software. Optical probes are available for stereotactic guidance with the Leksell Stereotactic System and StealthStation, one-insertion needle biopsy, and hand-held measurements during resection.

Fluorescence

Probe-based 5-ALA fluorescence spectroscopy quantifies protoporphyrin IX in situ, enabling objective high-grade tumour detection at a lower ALA dose — with or without the blue-light microscope.

Microcirculation

High-resolution laser Doppler flowmetry provides a real-time vessel alarm along the insertion trajectory, supporting safe advancement toward a pre-calculated target.

Tissue identification

Continuous grey–white matter discrimination indicates shades of tissue along the insertion line, adding an anatomical reference to navigation and stereotactic frames.

From research to regulatory approval

  1. Prototype 1

    Separate systems

Fluorescence and laser Doppler flowmetry operated as two independent systems with separate software.

  2. FluoRa 1.0

    Unified software

Both modalities retained as separate hardware but controlled through one clinical software interface.

  3. FluoRa 2.0

    Technology transfer

Fluorescence and flowmetry integrated into a single device; clinical investigation carried out in neurosurgery.

  4. FluoRa 3.0

    CE and FDA pathway

Complete optical guidance system in preparation for CE marking, with the FDA pathway identified.
